Every way to make a shared photo album in 2026

A shared photo album sounds like one feature, and it is at least four different products depending on who built it for you: a corner of your phone maker’s photo library, a social feed with albums inside, a printing service’s collection page, or a private room that exists for one occasion. The right one depends on the group. The marketing names tell you little. The differences are who can join, who pays, and what happens to the quality.

At the time of writing (September 2026), here is the whole field.

Apple Shared Albums

Built into every iPhone. New albums in iOS 27 are full-resolution with emoji reactions, and people can join and contribute from a web browser without an Apple Account or Apple device, which was not true a month ago. The economics land on the organiser. In upgraded albums, everything the group adds counts against the album owner’s iCloud storage, starting from a 5 GB free tier. Best for: groups where one iPhone-owning organiser is happy to carry the storage bill.

Google Photos shared albums

Works on any phone, the app is everywhere, and contributing means your photos live in Google Photos on your 15 GB quota shared with Gmail and Drive. The link-sharing model means anyone with the link can view the album, so the audience depends on link discipline. Best for: groups that already keep their whole libraries in Google Photos. The catches are worth reading in our full guide.

The private social apps

Cluster and its category, private groups where sharing happens inside the app, members-only, positioned as the antidote to social media. Good feeds, good reactions, and your photos live in that app’s cloud. That is the trade. The group gets a social experience and the album gets a landlord. Best for: friend groups who want the group-chat feeling with a photo album’s structure.

Private event Spaces

A Huddled Space is the occasion-shaped version: invite-only with no link to leak, no re-encoding in either direction, everyone contributes from any browser without an account, and roles on every member. An event Space closes to new uploads when the day ends, which is what gets everyone uploading while it is still fresh. The free tier holds 1 TB and up to 10 people per Space. Best for: trips, events and one-off groups, especially mixed groups of iPhone and Android.

Choose by the group, not the feature list

An all-iPhone family with one generous organiser is served well by Apple. A group that lives in Google Photos has no reason to leave it. A friend group that wants a feed should use the social apps. A mixed group collecting one event’s photos at full quality wants a Space. Start one for your next occasion, and the album belongs to the event instead of to a platform.
