# What an AI photo app should actually do

Every photo app claims AI now, the same way every app claimed cloud in 2015. The claim tells you nothing. The capabilities underneath the claim are a short list, and an app either has them or has the word. Here is the list I check against, in the order that matters.

## Search that understands what you mean

Search is the base capability. [Apple Intelligence searches photos by letting you describe what you are looking for](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/use-apple-intelligence-in-photos-iphf7de217f0/ios), and [Google's Ask Photos answers questions about your library](https://www.google.com/intl/en_us/photos/editing/). Every library finds faces. The test is whether a question like "the one of Sam on the rocks in the rain" returns the right photo from a five-year library.

## Editing that fixes rather than flatters

The second capability is real: erasing distractions, unblurring, brightening after the fact, the tools [both big platforms now ship as one-tap fixes](https://www.google.com/intl/en_us/photos/editing/). The test is whether the app edits the original or produces a copy, because a photo library that silently replaces your originals with processed versions is a library that no longer holds your photos.

## Collection that does not depend on everyone having the app

Almost every AI photo app skips collection. Without it, the AI has nothing to work on. Your library is one camera's worth of a life. A group weekend exists across six cameras, and an AI searching one of those six libraries is searching a sixth of the memory. An app that collects everyone's photos without an app install on the other side, browser-accessible, full quality, invite-only, feeds every other capability on this list.

## Agents that do the work instead of you

Agents are the newest capability. They are also what separates a tool from staff. [Huddled's Pro plan exposes the Space to AI agents through an API and MCP](https://huddled.cloud/business): the agent can sort, tag, assemble and file a Space's contents on your behalf, inside boundaries you set. On this list it is the only item that gives hours back rather than spending them.

## The short test

Ask any AI photo app two questions: where do its photos come from, and what does it do with your originals. If the answers are "your phone" and "process them", the AI is a filter on a box. The interesting apps collect the whole memory, keep the originals untouched, and put the boring work on an agent. [Start a Space](https://huddled.cloud/sign-up) and see what the whole stack does with a real weekend's photos.
