# How to make an online photo album that stays private

An online album is easy to make and easy to expose, because the two are the same product with different settings. Most people never open the settings. I'd rather you knew what those settings actually decide before your photos go online.

## The link is the product

Every sharing feature on the big platforms reduces to the same question: does this album have an address that works for anyone who holds it? On Google Photos, [anyone with the sharing link can view the album](https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6131416), and links travel: forwarded, screenshotted, pasted into bigger chats than you intended. On Apple, the album owner can [open a public website version of a shared album](https://support.apple.com/en-us/108314), which is convenient for distant relatives and identical, privacy-wise, to publishing. If your album is link-based, treat the link as publication.

## Accounts and ecosystems

To contribute to a Google Photos album, your photos live in Google Photos, on your own quota. To contribute to an Apple shared album from an iPhone, you are inside the ecosystem already. Both are fine arrangements when the whole group already lives in one camp, and both become friction when the album is for a mixed group, which most groups are.

## What private actually requires

Four properties decide it.

Invite-only access, meaning the album has no address at all. There is nothing to forward, so there is no accidental audience.

Roles, so you can decide who adds, who only looks, and who can bring new people in. A private album where every member can invite is only as private as the most sociable member's definition of the group.

Full quality, because a private album that compresses is a worse copy of the thing you were keeping safe. [Nothing in a Huddled Space is re-encoded](https://huddled.cloud/) in either direction; the file that comes down is the file that went up.

Deletion that holds. A Space has no public address, and deleting one removes it for good.

## The group chat is not the answer either

The usual private route is the group chat. It fails on quality, because chats compress everything, and on permanence, because the photos scroll away from the trip and into the general noise of the chat.

## The short version

Link-based sharing is publishing with extra steps. Private means invite-only with no link at all, roles on every member, and full-quality files. [Start a Space](https://huddled.cloud/sign-up) for your next album, and privacy is the default rather than a settings expedition.
